We like this as a quick side dish and it’s gluten free to boot. It’s similar to those box or bagged pasta side dishes you buy for $1 each at the store. That sounds like a great price, until you realize how little it actually costs to make it yourself. My cost works out to be under sixty-two cents. I make several at a time to keep in the pantry, but you could easily make this one at a time, just omit the plastic bags.
1 1/2 cup rice (add to sandwich size plastic bag) | $.39 |
1/4 teaspoon oregano | $.02 |
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder | $.02 |
4 teaspoon dry chicken bouillon | $.13 |
1/2 teaspoon onion powder | $.02 |
1/4 teaspoon red or black pepper | $.01 |
1/4 teaspoon basil | $.02 |
Base cost compared to major pasta boxed brands | $.61 |
(add all spices to small plastic bag or a zip lock snack bag, store bag inside the bag for the rice)
To cook: put 2 Tablespoons of butter into a pan, fry the rice in the butter. Once it’s brown, add 2 3/4 cups of water and the spices, then cook until the rice is done, about 20 minutes.
