I grew up pretty poor, as did my mother and grandmother before me. Granny had a garden until she got too old to continue. Mom never had a garden, but she was a single parent trying to raise three kids, so she didn’t have time. I’ve always had some kind of garden, usually just a 4×8 area with tomatoes, lettuce, and onions. One of our goals is to put in a garden at the new homestead and grow as much as possible.
Wayne is working on setting up an area for me to use for my garden. Our plan is to do a series of small round beds with high planting rates. I love the idea of Square Foot Gardening, but we don’t have an abundance of wood suitable for the beds. What we do have is a bunch of round barrels that aren’t being used, so we are going to cut them down to make garden beds.
This will also work better in the front yard where we’d like to plant and be easier to both weed and protect from rabbits and deer. Since we are in Central Florida, our real planting season starts in September. We plan to start cutting and arranging barrels in early August, around the same time that I start our seeds.
